WhatsApp us a screenshot of any competitor's drain unblock quote. We'll tell you if it's fair — in plain language, in 5 minutes, no commitment.

Why we do this for free

HK drain unblock has a quiet epidemic of bait-quote scam operators: "HKD 200 起" on the phone, then HKD 1,800-3,500 on-site after the customer has nowhere to turn. HK01, Apple Daily, and Consumer Council (消委會) all have documented cases.

We publish our own rates publicly (HKD 800 starting, typical) precisely because we believe pricing opacity is the #1 problem in this industry. Offering a free check on any quote — including our competitors' — is a logical extension of that belief.

If we tell you your quote is fair (even from a competitor), you save time. If we tell you it's high, you have ammunition to negotiate or walk away. Either way, the industry gets a little less opaque.

What to send us via WhatsApp

  1. Screenshot of the quote — phone text, photo of paper, anything
  2. Brief description of the job — "toilet won't flush, water rises slow" / "kitchen drain backed up after monsoon" / etc
  3. Your district — Central / TST / Sham Shui Po / etc
  4. Optional: how the operator described the problem — sometimes the descriptive language reveals the bait pattern

We'll respond in 5-15 min business hours with: (1) whether the quote falls in fair-price range, (2) any red flags in the operator's language, (3) what an honest baseline price would be.

The 5 fastest red flags (memorise these)

Red flagWhat it actually means
"HKD 200 起" or below on phoneBait price. Will become HKD 1,500-3,500 once they're on-site and you can't leave.
"Quote only after we see it"They price-discriminate by perceived budget — same job costs different customers different amounts.
Cash only / no receiptNo paper trail = no Consumer Council case = no recourse if work fails.
"This is more serious than usual"Most common on-site upsell line. Often the job is exactly the standard case.
Pressure to decide in <5 minutesFair operators wait for you to read the written quote. Pressure = scam pattern.

Fair price baselines (HK 2026)

Use these as quick sanity check. Our published rates match the cheapest fair-quote column.

Job typeFair range (typical)Red zone (probably high)
Toilet unblock (basic)HKD 500-900HKD 1,500+ without clear justification
Kitchen drainHKD 700-1,200HKD 2,000+ for standard case
Bathroom + washing machineHKD 700-1,000HKD 2,500+ unless shared-stack
AC condensate / ceiling leakHKD 800-1,500HKD 3,000+ for in-flat only
Shared-stack (OC must sign off)HKD 3,000-5,000+Any quote without OC authorisation = walk away
After-hours surcharge+HKD 150-300+HKD 500+ without prior agreement

If your quote is in the red zone, get a second opinion — from us, or from any other published-rate operator.

Why "starting" not "fixed"Real drain conditions vary. A drain that looks similar can need 30 min or 90 min depending on what's lodged inside. Fair quoting = "HKD 800 starting + written confirmation before work begins." Scam quoting = "HKD 200 起" + on-site surprise.

What to do if you've already been scammed

Step 1 — File with Consumer Council (消委會)

Hotline: 2929 2222 · Online: consumer.org.hk · Free, no lawyer needed. Even if you don't recover money, the case is logged, the operator gets flagged, and you reduce the next victim's risk.

Step 2 — Small Claims Tribunal (for amounts under HKD 75,000)

If you paid for work that wasn't done or was overpriced, Small Claims Tribunal handles disputes under HKD 75,000. Filing fee ~HKD 20-120. No lawyer required — designed for self-represented claimants. Information: judiciary.hk → Small Claims Tribunal.

Step 3 — If shared-stack work was done without OC sign-off

Under Building Management Ordinance Cap. 344, shared infrastructure work (vertical waste stack, communal drains) requires OC (業主立案法團) authorisation. If a contractor proceeded without it, you have grounds to dispute payment + file with Lands Tribunal. We provide written documentation that supports such disputes.

Step 4 — If you suspect fraud (intentional false representation)

HK Police DCC (District Crime Squad) accepts fraud reports for cases involving deliberate misrepresentation. Call 999 if ongoing, or report to nearest police station for past incidents. Threshold for "fraud" is high — usually requires the operator to have lied about scope of work or qualifications.

How to verify ANY drain operator (5-question checklist)

  1. Do they publish their starting rates online? If no — that's a yellow flag.
  2. Will they send a written quote via WhatsApp before arriving? If no — that's a red flag.
  3. Will they issue a written receipt with a BR number? If no — that's a red flag.
  4. Will they do an on-site retest before leaving (with you watching)? If no — that's a red flag.
  5. What's their policy if the drain reblocks within 14 days? Vague answer = red flag. Specific policy (e.g., "we return at no charge") = green.

Run this check on us (DrainFix HK) and on any competitor. The answers should be specific, not vague. If a vendor can't give clear answers, that's information.

Our own answers to those 5 questions

None of these are unique to us. ANY honest HK drain operator should meet all 5. If they don't, they're trading on opacity.
